pokeberry

Toxic native berry

Pokeberry is the dark purple berry of the pokeweed plant, native to eastern North America.

The berries grow in clusters and were historically used to make ink and dye—early American colonists wrote with pokeberry ink.

Though birds eat them readily, the berries are toxic to humans and most mammals.

Also called inkberry.
