plantation home
Southern agricultural mansion
A plantation home is the main residence on a plantation, typically referring to the large, stately houses built by wealthy landowners in the American South before the Civil War.
These homes—often featuring columned porches and Greek Revival architecture—were symbols of slaveholder wealth, built and maintained by enslaved labor.
Today they function as museums, event venues, or private residences, though their use for weddings and tourism draws criticism for romanticizing the antebellum era: They toured a plantation home outside New Orleans.
