pitchpole
Boat flips vertically
To pitchpole is to flip end over end, especially when a boat capsizes by going stern over bow—the opposite of the more common side-to-side capsize.
The term comes from sailing, where a wave can catch a vessel's bow and send it tumbling forward: The catamaran pitchpoled in heavy surf.
The word also applies to vehicles or objects that flip longitudinally.
