pit toilet

Ground-hole privy facility

A pit toilet is a simple toilet consisting of a hole in the ground, typically covered by a small structure for privacy.

Unlike flush toilets, waste drops directly into the pit below, where it decomposes over time.

Common at campsites, rural areas, and developing regions where plumbing isn't available: The trailhead had only a pit toilet.

Also called a pit latrine or outhouse.
