pirate code
Seafaring outlaw guidelines
Pirate code refers to the informal rules governing conduct among pirates, historically covering division of plunder, compensation for injuries, and shipboard behavior.
More broadly, it describes any unwritten understanding among those operating outside the law: There's a pirate code—you don't rat on your crew.
The phrase gained pop culture currency through films where pirates invoke it as binding or merely advisory: The code is more what you'd call guidelines.
