pickax

Rock-breaking implement

A pickax is a hand tool with a heavy metal head mounted on a wooden handle, used for breaking up hard ground, rock, or pavement.

One end of the head is pointed, the other typically flattened like a chisel.

The tool is associated with mining, construction, and manual labor: The workers swung pickaxes at the frozen earth.
