aromaticity

Cyclic electron delocalization

Aromaticity is a property of certain ring-shaped molecules that makes them unusually stable.

The classic example is benzene, whose six carbon atoms share electrons in a way that resists the chemical reactions you'd expect.

Chemists extended the term from benzene to other molecules meeting specific electron-count rules.

The word connects to aroma because early aromatic compounds had distinctive smells, though the chemical definition now has nothing to do with fragrance.
