phantom smell
Imaginary scent perception
A phantom smell is an olfactory hallucination—perceiving a smell when no source is present.
The experience can be fleeting or persistent, pleasant or foul.
Phantom smells may signal neurological conditions, migraines, or seizures, though they also occur without underlying illness: She kept smelling smoke, but doctors found nothing wrong.
Also called phantosmia.
