phantasmagoric
Like fever visions
Phantasmagoric describes something dreamlike, shifting, and surreal—as if glimpsed in a fever dream or hallucination.
The word comes from phantasmagoria, an 18th-century spectacle using projected images to create ghostly illusions.
Now it applies to anything with that quality of strange, fluid transformation: The carnival had a phantasmagoric quality, with masked figures emerging from fog and colored lights.
Often suggests the uncanny or nightmarish rather than merely imaginative.
