pet rocks

Inanimate seventies craze

Pet rocks were a 1970s novelty item consisting of ordinary stones sold as low-maintenance "pets," complete with a cardboard carrier and humorous care instructions.

The fad was brief but wildly successful, making its creator a millionaire.

Today the term often appears as shorthand for any absurd product that inexplicably sells, or for something requiring zero effort to maintain: My houseplants might as well be pet rocks for all the attention I give them.
