penfriends
Distant writing companions
Penfriends are people who maintain a friendship through exchanging letters, typically having met through correspondence rather than in person.
The term is more common in British English; Americans usually say pen pals.
The concept predates the internet, when writing letters was the primary way to connect with someone distant: She had penfriends in France and Japan throughout her childhood.
