pawls
Ratchet wheel stoppers
Pawls are pivoted levers or bars designed to engage with the teeth of a ratchet wheel, allowing movement in one direction while preventing backward motion.
They're essential components in winches, jacks, and hoisting mechanisms: The pawls clicked as he cranked the boat trailer.
A single such device is a pawl.
