paradigmatic

Serving as archetype

Paradigmatic means serving as a model or prime example of something: Her career is paradigmatic of the self-made entrepreneur.

In linguistics, paradigmatic refers to the relationship between elements that could substitute for each other in a structure—choosing "walked" versus "ran" in a sentence, as opposed to syntagmatic relationships between elements that appear together.

The general sense dominates outside academic contexts.
