A paper cut is a small, shallow wound caused by the edge of a sheet of paper slicing the skin.
Despite being minor, paper cuts are notoriously painful because they occur on sensitive fingertips and leave nerve endings exposed to air.
The term sometimes describes any surprisingly painful minor injury: It's just a paper cut, but it stings like hell.
