palmettos

Southern coastal plants

Palmettos are fan palms—palm trees with fan-shaped leaves radiating from a central point.

The word most often refers to the cabbage palmetto native to the southeastern United States, which appears on South Carolina's flag and gives the Palmetto State its nickname.

The beach was lined with palmettos.
