palliation
Easing without curing
Palliation is the easing of symptoms or suffering without addressing the underlying cause.
In medicine, palliative care focuses on comfort rather than cure: The treatment was purely palliative.
The word extends to any superficial remedy that provides temporary relief: His apology was mere palliation, not a real solution.
