overpaint
Cover with pigment
To overpaint is to apply paint over an existing painted surface—whether to cover, correct, or alter what's beneath.
In art restoration, overpaint refers to later additions that obscure original work: Cleaning revealed that much of the sky was overpaint from the 1800s.
Artists overpaint their own canvases to revise compositions or reuse materials.
