overpaints
Layers paint atop
Overpaints is the third-person singular form of the verb overpaint, meaning to apply a new layer of paint over an existing surface or image.
In art restoration, overpainting refers to later additions that cover original work, sometimes by the artist themselves, sometimes by restorers: X-ray analysis revealed that someone overpaints the original figure with a landscape.
The term also applies more generally to any situation where fresh paint covers what was there before.
