overpainted

Covered with paint

Overpainted describes something that has been painted over, either to cover previous work or to apply too much paint.

In art restoration, an overpainted area is where later additions obscure the original: The conservator removed overpainted sections to reveal the artist's true intentions.

More generally, overpainted suggests excess—too many coats, too heavy a hand: The overpainted trim lost all its detail.
