overpackaging
Too much packaging
Overpackaging is the use of excessive or unnecessary packaging materials for a product.
A small item arrives in a large box filled with plastic and foam; a single piece of fruit comes shrink-wrapped on a styrofoam tray.
The term carries implicit criticism—wastefulness, environmental harm, corporate indifference: The amount of overpackaging in online orders is ridiculous.
