overcompression
Too much compression
Overcompression is excessive compression, particularly in audio and video processing where too much dynamic range reduction flattens the sound or image: The overcompression made the track sound lifeless.
In engines, overcompression occurs when combustion pressure exceeds design limits.
The term applies anywhere compression is taken too far—data files, spinal discs, economic analysis.
