oriels
Projecting alcove windows
Oriels are bay windows that project from an upper story, supported by brackets or corbels rather than extending to the ground.
Common in Gothic and Tudor architecture, they add light and space to upper rooms while creating visual interest on a building's facade: The medieval college was distinguished by its stone oriels overlooking the courtyard.
