embrasures

Fortification window openings

Embrasures are openings in a wall or parapet, typically splayed wider on the inside than outside.

In fortifications, they allow defenders to fire weapons while remaining protected: soldiers positioned at the embrasures.

In architecture, the term describes the angled sides of a window or door opening cut through a thick wall, which let in more light than a straight-sided opening would.
