hammer-on

Fretboard finger strike

A hammer-on is a guitar technique where a note is sounded by sharply pressing a fretting finger onto the string rather than picking it.

The finger "hammers" down hard enough to make the string vibrate.

This creates smooth, rapid transitions between notes: He played a quick hammer-on from the fifth to the seventh fret.

The opposite technique is a pull-off.
