online petition
Virtual signature campaign
An online petition is a document collecting signatures through the internet to demonstrate public support for a cause or demand action from authorities.
Unlike paper petitions, they can spread rapidly through social media and gather thousands of signatures in hours: The online petition to save the library got fifty thousand signatures overnight.
Their actual influence on decision-makers varies widely—some spark real change, others amount to little more than symbolic gestures.
