oil derrick
Petroleum extraction structure
An oil derrick is the tower structure erected over an oil well, supporting the drilling equipment used to bore into the earth.
The framework holds the hoisting apparatus that raises and lowers drill pipe.
By extension, oil derrick often refers to the entire drilling rig: Oil derricks dotted the Texas landscape.
Named for a 17th-century English hangman whose gallows the structure resembles.
