Bread underneath only
Open-face describes a sandwich served on a single slice of bread with toppings exposed rather than covered by a second slice: an open-face turkey sandwich with gravy.
The term extends to anything featuring an uncovered front surface, particularly watches with visible dials rather than protective covers.
