nor'wester

Northwestern wind blast

A nor'wester is a strong wind or storm blowing from the northwest.

The term appears most often in coastal regions where such winds have particular significance—New Zealand, the northeastern United States, and parts of India and Bangladesh, where nor'westers bring violent spring thunderstorms.

Also spelled northeaster when the direction is northeast: The nor'wester brought heavy rain and rough seas.
