nesting doll
Doll within doll
A nesting doll is a hollow wooden figure that opens to reveal a smaller figure inside, which contains a still smaller one, and so on.
The traditional Russian version is called a matryoshka.
The concept extends to anything with layered, self-containing structure: The scandal revealed nesting dolls of corruption—each revelation exposed another beneath it.
