babushka

Tied-under-chin headscarf

A babushka is a headscarf folded into a triangle and tied under the chin, traditionally worn by older women in Russia and Eastern Europe.

The word is Russian for grandmother, and the scarf carries associations with elderly peasant women: She wrapped a babushka around her head against the cold.

In American English, babushka sometimes refers to the grandmother herself.
