daruma
Wishing doll, Japan
A daruma is a round, hollow Japanese doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism.
The dolls are weighted to right themselves when tipped—symbolizing resilience and persistence.
Traditionally, you paint in one eye when setting a goal and the second when you achieve it: I finally got to fill in my daruma's other eye.
