nation states
Independent political entities
Nation states are political entities where the boundaries of a state align with a distinct national population sharing common identity, culture, or ethnicity.
The concept emerged in 19th-century Europe as empires gave way to countries organized around national identity.
In practice, few states achieve perfect alignment between political borders and national populations: France and Japan approximate the nation state ideal; most countries contain multiple ethnic groups.
The hyphenated form nation-state emphasizes the fusion of nation (people) with state (government).
