street racing
Illicit road competitions
Street racing is the informal, usually illegal racing of vehicles on public roads rather than designated tracks.
It often happens at night on empty stretches of highway or industrial areas: The cops broke up a street racing meet on the old airport road.
The culture has its own subgenres—drag racing, drifting, time attacks—and features heavily in films and video games.
