A javelin is a light spear designed for throwing rather than thrusting.
In ancient warfare, soldiers hurled javelins at enemies before close combat.
The javelin throw survives as a track and field event: She won gold in the javelin.
The word also names the spear-like projectile itself: He picked up the javelin for his final attempt.
