post-polio syndrome
Survivor's late decline
Post-polio syndrome is a condition affecting people who recovered from polio, typically appearing decades after the initial infection.
Symptoms include new muscle weakness, fatigue, and pain in muscles and joints.
The syndrome occurs when nerve cells damaged by the original poliovirus begin to fail after years of compensating for lost function: She developed post-polio syndrome forty years after her childhood illness.
