moving pictures
Flickering screen entertainment
Moving pictures is an early term for motion pictures or films—the technology that creates the illusion of movement through rapidly displayed still images.
The phrase was common in the early twentieth century before *movies* and *films* became standard: The nickelodeon showed moving pictures for five cents.
Now chiefly historical or nostalgic.
