monkey's fist

Weighted heaving knot

A monkey's fist is a heavy knot tied at the end of a rope, forming a compact ball that can be thrown across a distance.

Sailors use it to heave a light line to shore or another vessel, with a heavier rope attached behind.

The knot wraps around itself in an intricate spherical pattern, often weighted with a core.
