misrecognition

Wrongly seeing something

Misrecognition is the failure to recognize something correctly—identifying it as something other than what it is.

In philosophy and social theory, particularly following Althusser and Honneth, misrecognition describes how people internalize distorted images of themselves through ideology or social relations: The working class's misrecognition of its own interests perpetuates existing power structures.

More plainly, it can mean simply failing to recognize someone or something: His misrecognition of her at the party was embarrassing.
