misperception

Getting it wrong

Misperception is a mistaken understanding or interpretation of something—seeing or believing incorrectly.

It differs from misconception in emphasizing the act of perceiving rather than the resulting belief: The fog created a misperception of distance.

Often used for errors in how we take in information: His anger was based on a misperception of her tone.
