mishearing

Getting words wrong

A mishearing is an instance of hearing something incorrectly—perceiving different words or sounds than were actually spoken: The mishearing turned "I scream" into "ice cream".

Mishearings of song lyrics are common enough to have their own name: mondegreens.

The verb mishear follows the pattern of hear: mishear, misheard.
