habitus

Ingrained bodily comportment

Habitus is the ingrained habits, skills, and dispositions we acquire through life experience—particularly from our social class, culture, and upbringing.

The term comes from sociology and describes how environment shapes not just what we think but how we carry ourselves, what feels natural, and what seems possible: His working-class habitus made him uncomfortable at the country club.

Unlike conscious beliefs, habitus operates below awareness, structuring taste, posture, and instinctive reactions.
