misinterpreting

Getting it wrong

Misinterpreting is taking something the wrong way—understanding words, actions, or signals differently from how they were intended.

The word applies to spoken and written language but extends to any kind of communication or evidence: I think you're misinterpreting her silence as disapproval.

Misinterpreting often happens when context is missing or when someone brings their own assumptions to what they're seeing or hearing.
