midnight release
Witching hour debut
A midnight release is the launch of a highly anticipated product—typically a video game, book, or film—at 12:00 AM on its official release date.
Retailers stay open late and fans queue up to be among the first to own it: I waited in line for the midnight release of the new Zelda game.
The practice has declined as digital downloads allow instant access at midnight without leaving home.
