midlayer
Between base, shell
A midlayer is a garment worn between a base layer and an outer shell, typically for insulation in cold weather.
The term comes from outdoor and athletic apparel, where layering systems regulate temperature: I added a fleece midlayer before heading up the mountain.
Midlayers are usually lightweight and breathable—fleece jackets, down vests, or synthetic insulated pieces.
