baselayer
First clothing layer
A baselayer is clothing worn directly against the skin, designed to wick moisture and regulate body temperature during physical activity.
The term comes from outdoor and athletic wear, where layering systems build outward from base to insulating to outer shell: I always pack a merino baselayer for hiking.
Also spelled as two words.
