microcrack
Microscopic material flaw
A microcrack is a tiny fracture in a material, typically invisible to the naked eye but detectable through microscopy or other testing methods.
These minute fissures occur in metals, ceramics, concrete, bone, and other solid materials, often resulting from stress, fatigue, or thermal cycling.
While individually insignificant, microcracks can propagate and join together over time, eventually compromising structural integrity.
Engineers monitor for microcracks in critical components like aircraft parts and bridge supports.
