meta-model

System describing systems

A meta-model is a model of a model—a framework that defines the structure, rules, or constraints for creating other models.

In software engineering, a meta-model specifies what elements a modeling language can contain: UML has a meta-model that defines classes, attributes, and relationships.

The concept appears in linguistics, psychology, and systems theory wherever one level of abstraction governs another.
