red kettles
Holiday charity buckets
Red kettles are the iconic donation containers used by the Salvation Army during its annual holiday fundraising campaign.
Volunteers ring bells beside these bright red pots, typically stationed outside retail stores from Thanksgiving through Christmas: I always drop my change in the red kettles.
The campaign has become a fixture of American holiday seasons since the 1890s.
