mental hospitals
Inpatient treatment centers
Mental hospitals are institutions for treating people with severe psychiatric disorders.
The term was standard through the mid-20th century but now sounds dated or clinical.
Contemporary usage often prefers "psychiatric hospital" or "psychiatric facility." The informal mental hospital still appears in casual speech: He spent three months in a mental hospital after his breakdown.
