Woefulness is the quality or state of being woeful—full of grief, sorrow, or misery.
The word can describe either genuine anguish or, more often in contemporary use, exaggerated or performative sadness: the woefulness of his expression when denied dessert.
It sometimes carries a slightly literary or melodramatic tone.
